The value of hope – new report estimates $15 return on youth development programme in Canterbury

Canterbury youth provider Waipuna has published a new report celebrating the social impact of its Adventure Therapy programme – celebrating 25 years of partnership and innovation in youth development.

The Social Impact Assessment of Adventure Therapy at St John of God Waipuna, funded by the Rātā Foundation and conducted by independent researcher Sarah Wylie, captures the stories and outcomes of more than 100 young people who have taken part in Waipuna’s programmes since 2021. The findings show clear improvements in hope, self-belief, confidence, and wellbeing, along with stronger connections to whānau, education, and employment.

Waipuna Community Development Manager, Dan Eastwood, said “Waipuna’s impact comes from many people working together, the dedication of staff, the support and the commitment of  schools, Corrections, funders and community partners and most importantly the courage of the young person. It is this collective effort that makes change possible. Collaboration is the factor that has sustained this 25 year legacy.”

A companion Social Return on Investment (SROI) Analysis was also published, focused specifically on Waipuna’s youth reintegration programme delivery. Waipuna has worked in partnership with the Department of Corrections since 2013. The analysis found that for every dollar invested in this service, $15.44 in measurable social value is generated as a result of factors including avoidable justice system and policing costs, as well as improvements in wellbeing, employment, physical activity and other indicators of development.

Researcher Sarah Wylie said “It was a privilege undertaking this mahi, and an honour to hear from so many young adults who have undergone transformational positive change in their lives and those of their whānau as a direct result of their journey with Waipuna. The relationships the adventure therapy team build with young people are very special."
